Hardwood Deck Services in Bergen County, NJ
New Jersey weather can be tough on exterior wood. Sun, rain, snow and seasonal temperature changes can gradually wear down a deck’s finish, loosen boards and leave the surface looking faded or rough.
Precision Hardwood Flooring provides deck sanding, refinishing and repair services throughout Bergen County, NJ and surrounding areas.
Whether your deck needs a fresh protective finish, localized repairs or a more complete restoration, we start by evaluating the existing wood and determining what can realistically be improved before recommending the work.

Our Deck Sanding & Refinishing Process
DECK INSPECTION
We begin by checking the condition of the boards, existing coating, fasteners and areas showing wear, cracking, discoloration or moisture damage. This helps us determine whether the deck is a good candidate for sanding and refinishing or whether repairs should be completed first.
SANDING & SURFACE PREPARATION
The old or deteriorated finish is removed and rough or weathered areas are sanded to create a more consistent surface. The deck is then cleaned so dust and debris do not interfere with the new finish.
STAIN & PROTECTIVE FINISH
Depending on the condition of the wood and the appearance you want, we apply an appropriate exterior stain or protective finish designed for outdoor exposure.
FINAL INSPECTION
Once the work is complete, we inspect the deck for consistency and review any areas that may require additional attention.
Hardwood Decking FAQs
How often should a hardwood deck be refinished?
There isn’t one fixed schedule for every deck.
How often refinishing is needed depends on the wood species, type of finish, sun exposure, moisture, foot traffic and how well the deck has been maintained.
A deck that receives heavy direct sunlight or stays wet for long periods may need attention sooner than one that is more protected.
Fading, peeling finish, rough wood or areas that are no longer repelling water can be signs that the deck should be evaluated.
Can all types of deck damage be repaired?
Many common deck problems can be repaired, including loose boards, damaged fasteners and individual boards that have deteriorated.
However, extensive rot, structural movement or widespread water damage may require more than a surface repair.
We inspect the affected area first so we can determine whether a localized repair makes sense or whether a larger section needs attention.
How long does deck repair take?
The timeline depends on how much of the deck is affected and whether damaged boards, rail components or fasteners need to be replaced.
Small repairs may be completed relatively quickly, while larger repair and refinishing projects can take several days.
Weather conditions can also affect exterior work and drying times.
What can sanding and refinishing improve?
Sanding can remove weathered surface wood, old coatings, rough areas and some surface stains while preparing the deck for a new protective finish.
Refinishing can improve the appearance of the wood and help protect it from continued exposure to moisture and sunlight.
It cannot correct structural damage, severe rot or deeply deteriorated boards, which may need to be repaired or replaced first.
Why Exterior Wood Needs a Different Approach
A deck is exposed to conditions that indoor hardwood never sees.
Direct sunlight can fade finishes. Repeated moisture can cause wood to swell, crack or deteriorate. Temperature changes can also affect boards and fasteners over time.
Because of that, exterior wood needs to be evaluated differently from an indoor hardwood floor.
Before sanding or refinishing, we look at the condition of the boards, the existing coating and any areas that may need repair first.
Putting a new finish over damaged or unstable wood doesn’t solve the underlying problem. Proper preparation comes first.

EXCELLENT Based on 121 reviews Posted on Google Jonathan KurtzmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This review is about 4 months after the work. I find waiting more helpful because I’ve lived with the floors. Which are great. We bought a place with carpeted bedrooms and existing engineered floors. The existing floors can’t be matched. Russell showed us hardwood, engineered and vinyl to replace the carpets, and we agreed on engineered because it matched better. He suggested installing it lengthwise in the room because then it wouldn’t look like we were trying to match the flooring exactly when we couldn’t. And he suggested gluing it, which really stands out as better in comparison to the existing floating floor. Installation was perfect, as shown by a complete lack of complaints after 4 months. The pricing was good, the work done quickly and completely. No complaints, only a positive recommendation. As a note, we were referred to Russell by our daughter, who is similarly pleased with the work done in her house over a year ago. So a double recommendation!Posted on Google Joan KaplanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had our kitchen and hall floors refinished. Hardwood Deck Sanding and Refinishing
A deck doesn’t have to be replaced simply because the surface looks faded, scratched or weathered.
If the boards are still in good condition, sanding and refinishing may restore much of the wood’s appearance while adding a new layer of exterior protection.
We remove deteriorated coatings and weathered surface material, prepare the wood and apply an exterior finish appropriate for the project.
When damaged boards are present, we can evaluate whether repairs should be completed before the refinishing process begins.
Our Deck Repair Process
Inspect the Problem
We identify loose, cracked, deteriorated or damaged boards and look at the surrounding area to determine how far the problem extends.
Repair or Replace Affected Components
Depending on the condition, boards or fasteners may be secured, repaired or replaced.
Match Existing Materials
When replacement material is needed, we make a reasonable effort to match the dimensions and appearance of the existing deck. Older exterior wood naturally changes color over time, so an exact visual match is not always possible immediately.
Final Check
We inspect the repaired area for stability and determine whether sanding or refinishing would help improve the overall appearance.
Common Deck Problems We See
Faded or Peeling Finish
Sun exposure and weather can gradually break down exterior coatings and leave the wood exposed.
Rough or Splintering Boards
Weathering can raise the grain and create rough areas that may benefit from sanding when the wood is otherwise sound.
Loose Boards or Fasteners
Movement over time can affect boards, screws and other components that should be addressed before refinishing.
Cracked or Damaged Boards
Individual boards may sometimes be replaced without rebuilding the entire deck.
Moisture Damage
Areas that stay wet for long periods can deteriorate faster and should be inspected before a new finish is applied.
Uneven Appearance
Previous repairs, sun exposure and different ages of wood can create color variation. Refinishing may improve consistency, but older and newer boards may still age differently.
Refinish or Replace Your Deck?
If the majority of the deck structure and boards are still sound, sanding, repair and refinishing may be a practical way to extend its useful life.
Replacement may be the better option when there is widespread rot, significant structural movement, extensive deterioration or damage affecting a large portion of the deck.
We can evaluate the condition of the existing wood and explain whether restoration is realistic before you invest in unnecessary replacement.
