Hardwood Stair Sanding & Refinishing

Stair treads often show wear faster than the surrounding floors because the same areas are used repeatedly every day.

Scratches, worn finish, discoloration and an outdated stain can often be improved through professional sanding and refinishing without replacing the entire staircase.

We remove the existing finish, prepare the wood and apply a new stain and protective finish based on the condition of the stairs and the appearance you want.

If your hardwood floors are also being refinished, we can discuss stain options that help the stairs and flooring work together visually.

Our Stair Sanding & Refinishing Process

Inspection

We inspect the stair treads, risers, railings and surrounding woodwork to identify worn finish, damage, loose components and areas that may need repair before sanding begins.

Sanding & Preparation

The existing finish is removed and the exposed wood is prepared for staining or finishing. Stairs require careful work around edges, corners and adjoining trim where larger floor sanding equipment cannot be used.

Stain & Finish

You can keep a natural wood appearance or choose a stain that coordinates with nearby flooring and interior finishes. Protective coats are then applied according to the project requirements.

Final Inspection

We review the finished stairs for consistency and address any final details before the project is complete.

Hardwood Stairs and Handrails FAQs

How often should hardwood stairs be refinished?

There is no fixed refinishing schedule for every staircase. Stairs receive concentrated foot traffic, so their finish can wear faster than some other areas. Worn-through finish, heavy scratches or a dull center path on the treads are signs that the stairs should be evaluated.

Oak is one of the most common choices because it is durable, widely available and works with many flooring styles. Maple, walnut and other hardwoods may also be appropriate depending on the design, budget and surrounding flooring. Matching an existing floor also requires considering grain, stain and age.

We can usually create a close visual match, but an exact match cannot be guaranteed. Wood changes color as it ages, and the same stain can look different depending on species, grain, sanding and natural light. When appropriate, we can test stain options before finishing the full staircase.

Smaller stair refinishing projects may take only a few days, while more involved staircases take longer. The schedule depends on the number of steps, wood condition, repairs, stain selection and finish drying or curing time. We give a realistic timeline after evaluating the staircase.

Why Stair Work Requires Extra Attention

Stairs are different from an open hardwood floor.

Every tread, riser, edge, corner and railing is highly visible, and small inconsistencies can stand out once the finish is applied.

Stairs also need to feel secure underfoot. Loose treads, damaged wood or unstable railing components should be addressed rather than simply covered with a new finish.

That’s why we look at both the appearance and condition of the staircase before recommending refinishing, repair or replacement.

The goal is not simply to make the stairs look newer. It’s to make sure the finished staircase works visually with the rest of the home and remains functional for everyday use.

This review is about 4 months after the work. I find waiting more helpful because I’ve lived with the floors. Which are great. We bought a place with carpeted bedrooms and existing engineered floors. The existing floors can’t be matched. Russell showed us hardwood, engineered and vinyl to replace the carpets, and we agreed on engineered because it matched better. He suggested installing it lengthwise in the room because then it wouldn’t look like we were trying to match the flooring exactly when we couldn’t. And he suggested gluing it, which really stands out as better in comparison to the existing floating floor. Installation was perfect, as shown by a complete lack of complaints after 4 months. The pricing was good, the work done quickly and completely. No complaints, only a positive recommendation. As a note, we were referred to Russell by our daughter, who is similarly pleased with the work done in her house over a year ago. So a double recommendation!

Hardwood Stair & Handrail Installation

A staircase should feel like part of the home rather than an afterthought.

We install hardwood stair treads, handrails and related components for remodeling projects and new installations. The design can be coordinated with the surrounding flooring, trim and interior style so the finished staircase feels intentional.

During planning, we consider material, stain color, railing style and how the staircase connects with the flooring above and below.

Our Hardwood Stairs and Handrails Installation Process

Consultation & Design

We start by reviewing the existing staircase or proposed layout and discussing the appearance you want, including wood species, tread style, railing design and finish.

Preparation

The existing area is prepared as needed and measurements are confirmed before new components are installed.

Installation

Stair treads, handrails and related wood components are fitted and installed with attention to alignment, transitions and the surrounding finishes.

Finishing & Inspection

Depending on the project, the new wood may be sanded, stained and finished after installation. We then inspect the completed work and address final details.

Hardwood Stair & Handrail Repair

Loose treads, cracks, damaged nosing, worn wood and unstable railing components should be evaluated before they become larger problems.

Some stair damage can be repaired locally, while other situations may require individual components to be replaced.

We inspect the affected area first to determine what can reasonably be repaired and whether additional refinishing will be needed to help the repaired section blend with the surrounding wood.

Our Stair Repair Process

Inspect the Damage

We identify what is loose, cracked, worn or damaged and determine whether the issue is cosmetic, structural or a combination of both.

Repair or Replace Affected Components

Depending on the condition, damaged stair components may be secured, repaired or replaced.

Match the Existing Appearance

When new wood is introduced, we work to coordinate the species, dimensions and finish with the existing staircase as closely as practical.

Final Check

We inspect the repaired area for stability and appearance before completing the project.

Two Real Bergen County Stair Projects

These two Precision projects show the difference between building a new stair surface and restoring an existing staircase.

Natural Oak Staircase Installation

This Bergen County staircase was finished in natural oak to coordinate with the adjoining light hardwood flooring. The project shows how stair material and floor color can be planned together instead of treating the staircase as a separate finish.

Staircase Refinishing & Dark Stain
